How We Work
Each year, UFC delivers its services to thousands of students and their families in public and private schools, community organizations and churches throughout greater Philadelphia and surrounding counties. We cater our programs to the specific needs identified by each organization we work with, creating a unique, age-appropriate, experience for every individual.
Signature Programs
UFC’s Building Healthy Families (BHF) Programs provide age-appropriate, character-based, leadership and health curriculum for grades K-12, parents, and college age adults. In the past three years, we have been able to reach out to over 22,000 Philadelphians. Our programs include:
- Leading By Example
- Abstinence Until Marriage
- Equipping Children to Succeed in Education and Life (Summer Camp)
- Moving Ahead with Purpose
- Parent Leadership University
- Success Express (After School)
- I-MPACT Lives! (Mentoring Children of Prisoners)
Our History
In 1981, a group of faith and community leaders concerned about the sanctity and protection of human life, marriage, and family decided it was time to take action against the social issues facing our city. While seeking to raise consciousness regarding these issues, our concern about teen sexual activity, the absence of fathers in the home, and the breakdown of the family increased. As the organization grew, it brought together more passionate individuals who contributed to what the organization was officially named Urban Family Council in 1994.
Day in and day out, our services were delivered to schools, community centers, and churches throughout the city of Philadelphia and surrounding counties. We developed dynamic, character-based, leadership and health programs for every age category. Building Healthy Families became our motto as we strived to reach out to not only students but their parents and guardians as well.
With Urban Family Council’s mission firm and years of success in building healthy families, we were able to bring a very important aspect of learning to the Philadelphia education system and beyond-implementing character, relationship, and leadership enrichment, while tying in the affects of the media and society on our student’s growth and development at the same time.
The model of our programs created has been so successful that it started a whirlwind of opportunities that doubled UFC staff in size. Our programs have inspired many to support our mission over the years as well as our transition of moving to an urban setting, where we reside today. We are constantly inspired to go further and reach out to more families as we maintain a goal of excellence in all that we do. |
