Building Healthy Families (BHF)

An age-appropriate, character-based, leadership and health curriculum for youth in grades K-12, parents, and college age adults. Urban Family Council staff and volunteers provide these services in public and private schools, community groups, and various faith institutions. The program is divided in to several sections or units which include:  Leadership; Specialized Services; Abstinence Until Marriage; Camps, Training and After School; and Special Events and Workshops.  Each of these is described in detail on the associated pages of this website. Use the navigation bar to the left to begin your search.

Mentoring Children of Prisoners
Program for 2009-2010


UFC will partner with 18 local congregations, five community agencies, and two training organizations to serve children ages 4 to 18 over a period of three years. Project objectives are:

  1. Identify and enroll 360 children whose parents are prisoners in the local, State or Federal correction system,
  2. Link children with 360 mentors who have completed successful applications and screening/
    reference checks and received initial training, and
  3. Incorporate the elements of Positive Youth Development into the mentoring program, including skill acquisition for the 360 mentors through ongoing monthly training and support.

This matching grant requiires that UFC raise $54,000 for the first year of programming.

Special Events and Workshops
Graduation ceremonies, tea parties, and field trips are scheduled at the close of some of our educational programs. Throughout the year, however, UFC holds several fundraising and awareness events namely: Annual Spring Fundraising Gala, Fall Fundraising Luncheon, and Back to School Rally.
